PHARMACY SCHOOL MAKES ITS DEBUT
Date: 18-Jan-2007
Author: Adriel Duncan
Seventy-two pharmacy students made ETSU history as they went to school for the first time at ETSU's new College of Pharmacy Tuesday.

Student Tim Lewis said his first day was "going great," and that he was excited about finally getting started after a week of orientation activities.

"It's their first day, so they may want to hang around between classes to talk or form study groups," said Wendy Williams, dean's office coordinator at the college of pharmacy.

Student Rachel Hanners began her day with anatomy and physiology at 8:15 a.m. "It actually wasn't too scary for the first class," she said.

The students all attended classes together in Carl. A Jones Hall until 5 p.m.

Of the Class of 2010, 94 percent are from Tennessee or the surrounding region, and about 25 percent are first-generation college students, according to a Jan. 8 press release.

The release also noted that 61 percent of the class is female, and the student's ages range between 20 and 43.

Lewis, who is from Harlan, Ky., said he applied to a couple of different pharmacy schools before deciding to attend ETSU. "I came and interviewed here, saw the campus, saw the people, and was really kind of taken aback from it. The facilities are great."

Because he is a veteran, Lewis also said, "Going here and being close to the VA made sense."

Hanners, also from Kentucky, decided to come to ETSU after graduating from the University of Kentucky. "I found out about the pharmacy school from a friend whose family member worked at ETSU," she said. "I saw the opportunity to be in the inaugural class, and it wasn't too far away."

The pharmacy school was also awarded Precandidate Status on Tuesday, the highest level of designation that the university is eligible for at the current time from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen publicly endorsed ETSU's plans for the College of Pharmacy on March 17, 2005, requesting that the university raise $5 million in private funds before presenting its proposal to the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

According to a press release, the money was raised in only 58 days, and final authorization of the pharmacy school was granted in the summer of 2005. An additional $2.5 million was raised before the arrival of the first class.
